About The Jean Armour Burns Trust

History of the Trust

The Jean Armour Burns Trust was formed when the Jean Armour Burns Houses Ltd was wound up and its assets sold to East Ayrshire Council.

When the Trust was formed the Directors of the Houses were appointed as Trustees.

The purpose of the Trust is to stimulate the public interest in the Scots tongue and support and promote the teaching of the works of Robert Burns in Scotland.

THE TRUST

The capital from the sale of the houses has been invested through Brewin Dolphin.

A major part of our income is distributed through grant funding projects for Burns Clubs, talented Groups and individuals in their communities, and to the A.S.N. and language & communication resource bases in schools.

Trustees of the Trust Fund can be appointed from member Clubs of the Glasgow & District Burns Association or burnsians in the wider community.

In addition, Burns Club and others can contribute to a restricted fund to benefit the tenants, both old and new, in Mauchline.

This Restricted Fund is administered by the trustees. Any donations which are specifically made to the Jean Armour Burns houses, will be spent on projects for the tenants and their environment at the houses.

In 2019 in partnership with East Ayrshire Council the Trustees designed and installed a communal seating area on the site of the original houses

May 2019 saw the Opening of the new Communal Seating Area for the residents of Gilbert Burns Place, Mauchline. Robert Stevenson opened the proceedings with a brief history of the Houses. Enez Anderson cut the ribbon to declare the seating area opened, thereafter it was formally handed over to East Ayrshire Council. The Leader of the Council, Councillor Douglas Reid, said a few words after Enez and one of the tenants spoke of the gratitude she felt, Ken Dalgleish, current President of the GDBA, wrapped up the formal part of the day.

All enjoyed the themed barbecue and the entertainment which followed.
